这部戏剧主要通过中国改革开放30周年以来，通过中国民族产业发展史，同时折射出三个重组家庭的婚姻状况以及三十年变迁每个家庭的悲欢离合的故事。每个人从20多岁到50多岁，在国内的家庭伦理剧真正反映重组家庭而且是三个重组家庭的故事，很少见。同时依托近中国30年辉煌变迁折射三个家庭，这三个家庭把中国整个大的历史背景全部推到后面，通过三个家庭折射出变化。苏红梅难产，产下一子。不料，丈夫贺天明却背叛了她，另娶高干之女康小丽为妻。苏父也因此心脏病突发猝死，苏家大乱了。苏蕾是苏红梅的妹妹，断然将孩子抱给了贺天明，喝令他马上滚蛋，从此别让姐姐再看见他。打那以后，苏红梅失去了儿子的下落，彻底绝望了。同时，由于贺天明隐瞒了婚史，康小丽无法原谅他的欺骗行为，不仅故意给孩子取名叫贺狗子，还百般地折磨他，好一场家庭“冷暴力”拉开了帷幕。后来，苏红梅进了黄酒厂当了一名工人，却险些遭到车间主任马卫国的强暴，幸亏师傅杜和平挺身相救。然而，令人始料不及的是，杜和平却不慎将马卫国意外打死而被捕入狱，妻子于芳也断然与他离了婚。
