本片故事讲述的是约翰·杜立德医生(艾迪·墨菲饰)的奇怪经历。约翰·杜立德医生从小就有一种天赋，他能与动物沟通交谈，而且无需借助任何科学仪器的辅助。然而，杜立德医生的这种与生俱来的天赋，随着年龄的增长，在经过多年之后，由于事情的繁忙及许多杂物的干扰，早已消失得无影无踪了。杜立德医生与朋友合开的诊所，由于经营不善连年亏损，终于决定要出售让给别人。当这个消息传到杜立德医生太太及两个小女儿的耳中时，她们马上劝阻杜立德医生，要他不要断然下决定，并且支持他将诊所继续开办下去。但是，当一天晚上他开车回家不小心撞到路旁的狗时，所有的事就有了令人吃惊的变化和发展……立德医生（艾迪·墨菲 Eddie Murphy饰）拥有一个幸福的家庭，一个小有名气的诊所，没有人知道他曾经有着异常的经历，那就是能够听懂动物的说话。小时候，他就和猫狗马驴之类的动物交谈过，了解动物的需要，知道它们的心事。随着岁数增长，杜立德医生早已失去了这个“特异功能”。然而，他却因为一次开车差点撞上路边的小狗，似乎又能听......
