电视剧以越南自卫反击战为背景展开故事。童川和江曼插队时相爱。童川参军后入新兵连集训时，由于枪走火误伤他人，被判刑两年，江曼回城后日想夜盼，但等到却是一填封“绝情信”。在邻居的热心介绍和母亲的一再催促下，江曼被迫与军官林大林结识，林爱上江曼，但是江难忘旧情又不忍言明，婚礼之际，童川被提战前释放回京，他临行前写给江曼的信恰巧被林大林看到，大林感到受了极大的侮辱，愤然离去。对越自卫还击战开始，童川由北京部队补充到昆明部队，正巧分在林大林连里当战士。在铁血生死关头，两个男子汉摒弃宿怨，林大林火线战死后，江曼出于负疚和补偿，毅然参军，来到大林生前连队，担任野战救护所护士长，童、江重逢，虽旧情如故，但前有敌军，后是战友尸骨……童川率部坚守四号高地时，双眼被炸瞎。江曼日夜守护，发誓再不分离，子夜，沉寂的都市中，行进着威武的凯旋大军。此片荣获第五届大众电视“金鹰奖”，第七届全国优秀电视剧“飞天奖”二等奖。童川和江曼的扮演者石兆琪与朱琳分获第五届金鹰奖最佳男女主角奖。
