该剧由12个独立的故事结构而成，每个故事都以一位进城打工的农民工为主线，描写他们的喜怒哀乐、爱恨情仇，真实展现他们背井离乡在城市生存的孤苦无奈：进城做保姆的农村妇女深陷婚姻牢笼的悲惨境遇；顶着风险辛苦帮人开黑车却被拖欠薪水的农民司机；处处想帮人解决问题却招致祸端的小区保安；进城打工妻子却遭遇性骚扰的夫妇。悲剧故事的背后，是这些城市边缘人被忽略的自尊，被轻视的命运和他们对融入城市的热切渴望。
