上世纪20年代陕南胡家庄村民抗捐抗税抗租，遭到官兵剿杀，被迫集体逃亡到豫西紫云县狗娃山，自立山寨为伙，反抗官府。伙中男当家大黑骡为掌柜，英姿飒爽的女当家被称为“奶奶”。上山途中奶奶捡到一个快要饿死的男孩，起名狗娃。十年后（1935年），紫云县大旱，当地恶霸吃人贼因张家堡村民交不上地租，烧杀抢掠张家堡，奶奶带狗娃山众救援张家堡村民。吃人贼的儿子李冬青留日归国，唆使保安团攻打狗娃山，大黑骡因此丧命。为了给大家寻找活路，狗娃率众一战紫云县，消灭了保安团；二战李家寨，活捉了李冬青；三战牛头山，打败悍匪老牛头；四战过江龙，夺回狗娃山；五战中央军，解救红军张敢为。抗日战争爆发，狗娃跟随奶奶共同抗日，在党的领导下，他们历尽艰险，打败了李冬青，瓦解了日军突袭八路军的阴谋。
