本片根据计宗英老人真实事迹改编，讲述老人孝老爱亲高尚品德的感人故事。65年前，17岁的计宗英嫁到孙家，那年豆豆8岁， 7岁因患天花失明。计宗英的细心与温柔得到了全家人的认可。计宗英答应公公嘱托，一定会照顾豆豆一辈子。计宗英的善良化解了儿子立冬与豆豆的矛盾，不甘成为立冬眼中废人的豆豆，放羊时因听收音机入神而丢了羊，心急寻找羊群却不慎掉下山崖摔断腿。本想死了一了百了。大雨夜计宗英和丈夫在山崖下找到受伤的豆豆，豆豆被计宗英的善举感动，从此亲切称呼计宗英为嫂娘，豆豆通过自己的努力，不但为自己捏好了骨，多年来也替村里乡亲捏骨。孙秉德去世之后，计宗英一如既往照顾孙豆豆，却招来村里人的闲话。计宗英不但没有退缩，而且还把劝她回娘家的弟弟推出了门，继续支撑着一个孙家。21世纪生活改善，孙立冬将计宗英和豆豆接到县城准备享受天伦之乐，但就在此时却发现孙豆豆已是胃癌晚期。不愿再拖累嫂娘的豆豆拒绝治疗，让嫂娘带自己回到老家。2018年1月，孙豆豆在弥留之际最后一次吃到嫂子做的搅团，亲口对嫂子说出了藏在心里几十年的感谢话，如果不是嫂娘，豆豆早就不在人世了。说完后豆豆永远闭上了眼睛。因为计宗英孝老爱亲的高尚品德，孙豆豆身残志不残的自强精神，整个白保村村民自发参与孙豆豆老人葬礼，将老人圆满送终。
